Green Roof Drainage Design

Coordinate Retention, Safe Drainage and Downstream Capacity
A green roof can retain and delay rainfall, yet excess water still needs a safe route through primary outlets, emergency overflows and the downstream network. RIDA assesses this project-specific interface as part of the agreed green-roof scope. See our wider roof drainage design service for other roof types and broader system requirements.

| Technical deliverable | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Project-specific runoff and flow assessment | Establishes an evidenced basis for coordinating retained water and runoff. |
| Review of outlets, emergency overflows, exceedance routes and maintenance access | Supports safe removal of excess rainfall within the agreed scope. |
| Marked-up layouts, design notes and coordination comments | Provides information for the architect, structural engineer, waterproofing designer and green-roof supplier. |
| Further modelling or reporting, where agreed | Supports planning or technical review where extra evidence is required. |
Where runoff enters a wider site network, the outputs can be coordinated with RIDA’s drainage design service. Deliverables are confirmed in the appointment and do not guarantee approval by any authority.
Key Green-Roof Drainage Considerations
Runoff assumptions and roof build-up
The assessment considers roof area, falls, extensive or intensive build-up, manufacturer performance data, design rainfall and applicable allowances. Retention data must relate to the proposed system; it cannot automatically replace calculated downstream attenuation.
Outlets, overflows and access
Outlet capacity, emergency overflow routes and inspection access are reviewed against the proposed arrangement. Applicable rainwater drainage and Building Regulations requirements should be checked for the project and jurisdiction. See Approved Document H: drainage and waste disposal.
Downstream drainage and attenuation
Green-roof runoff may form part of a wider sustainable drainage systems design. The National standards for sustainable drainage systems may apply to the wider surface-water approach. Planning-stage discharge limits and storage requirements can be addressed through coordinated drainage strategies.
Information Needed to Scope Your Design
- Roof plans, areas and falls — to define the catchment and flow paths.
- Proposed build-up and manufacturer data — to assess project-specific retention and discharge performance.
- Outlet and overflow proposals — to review capacity, location and exceedance routing.
- Existing drainage layouts and discharge constraints — to assess the downstream interface.
- Planning or technical comments — to identify submission requirements.
- Programme and required deliverables — to define the appointment.
Applicable flood risk climate change allowances can be reviewed where required by the planning or flood-risk scope. Projects needing wider multi-party input can be discussed through RIDA’s drainage consultancy service.
Green Roof Drainage Design FAQs
Can RIDA work from existing roof drawings and green-roof supplier data?
Yes, subject to scope review. RIDA will identify missing rainfall, outlet, discharge or downstream drainage information before confirming the appointment.
What will the design information cover?
The agreed outputs may cover runoff, flow rates, retention evidence, outlets, overflows, exceedance routes and the downstream connection.
Can green-roof retention reduce downstream attenuation requirements?
Potentially. Any reduction must be supported by project-specific performance evidence and accepted calculation assumptions. Supplier data alone does not establish the required storage volume.
What happens if further modelling or coordination is needed?
RIDA will identify the extra work, required inputs and proposed outputs for agreement before it is undertaken.
