Heartlands Hospital Bordesley Green East Birmingham– Clinic 9/UTC

Design for clinic 9 and the urgent treatment centre.

The Brief

Drainage strategy and Flood Risk Assessment to support the planning application and BREEAM requirements for Clinic 9 and the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC). The project required a strategy to ensure these essential hospital facilities remain fully operational and resilient during extreme flooding events.

The Challenge

We developed a strategy for a high-density brownfield site where the surrounding areas were already significantly impermeable. To avoid overloading the existing pipes, the new extensions required a level of design precision that balanced the hospital’s urgent need for space with the strict limitations of the current drainage capacity.

The Company Difference

We provided a detailed attenuation design using cellular storage tanks and precise flow controls to effectively manage runoff and reduce pressure on the public drainage network. After evaluating the drainage hierarchy and concluding that infiltration was not feasible, we identified a viable and efficient solution using the existing sewers. Our proactive approach ensured that the new hospital facilities could be developed safely while fully complying with all environmental and technical standards.

The Outcome

Technical approval was secured efficiently, enabling the hospital expansion to proceed without delays. The final design provided a robust and compliant drainage solution, satisfying all planning requirements and ensuring the new Clinic 9 and UTC facilities were fully protected and ready for operational use.
