Flood Defence
Flood defence infrastructure, such as flood walls and embankments, intended to protect an area against flooding to a specified Standard of Protection. Check Flood Defence zones on your site and review national flood risk data to understand your defended status. The GOV.UK flood risk and coastal change guidance explains how defences are assessed in planning applications.

Case Example
A river-wall built to protect a new apartment complex is a “Flood Defence.” The FRA must prove that this wall won’t simply push the floodwater into the houses across the river.
