Main River

A Main River is a larger watercourse on which the Environment Agency carries out maintenance, improvement, or construction work to manage flood risk. Development near a Main River requires Local Authority coordination and an EA Flood Risk Activity Permit. Permit requirements are set out on GOV.UK flood risk activities environmental permits.

Case Example

If your development is within 8 metres of a “Main River,” you must get a “Flood Risk Activity Permit” before digging foundations, or the EA can stop the work.
