Sewage / Sewerage
Sewerage refers to the physical infrastructure (pipes, manholes, pumping stations, and treatment works) used to transport wastewater, while sewage is the wastewater itself flowing within that system. Speak with a consultant to assess sewer capacity and flood risk from the drainage network. The GOV.UK flood risk and coastal change guidance covers how sewer flood risk is assessed in planning.

Case Example
During heavy rainfall, sewage systems can become overwhelmed, causing sewage to back up through manholes and flood streets when the sewerage network exceeds its capacity.
