Overtopping
Overtopping occurs when the water level in a river, canal, or behind a flood defence exceeds the height of the bank or structure, causing water to flow over it and flood the surrounding area. Speak with a consultant to assess overtopping risk and appropriate defence standards for your site as set out in the GOV.UK flood risk and coastal change guidance.

Case Example
During the Winter 2014 floods in Oxford, water levels in the River Thames and Hinksey Stream rose high enough to overtop their banks, flooding properties in the New Hinksey area.
