Ordinary Watercourse
An Ordinary Watercourse is every river, stream, ditch, drain, cut, dyke, surface water sewer (other than public sewers) and passage through which water flows, which is not designated as a main river. Works near an Ordinary Watercourse require Schedule 3 compliance and Land Drainage Consent. Consent requirements are explained in the GOV.UK ordinary watercourse consent guidance.

Case Example
A small stream at the back of a garden is usually an “Ordinary Watercourse.” If you want to build a bridge or culvert near it, you need “Land Drainage Consent” from the council.
